Former Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). His appointment was announced by the Department of Personal and Training on May 13, 2025.
Background: Ajay Kumar is a 1985 - batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre and has held various key positions, including Defence Secretary and Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Achievements: He played a crucial role in implementing landmark initiatives such as the creation of the Chief of Defence Staff post, the Atmanirbhar Bharat defence narrative, and the Agniveer scheme.
Term: His tenure as UPSC Chairman will last until October 2027,when he turns 65.
