RRB ALP 2025 : Selection Process, Exam Pattern, and Syllabus

RRB ALP is an examination conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) to recruit eligible candidates for the position of Assistant Loco Pilot in different railway zones across the country. It is one of the competitive exams conducted nationwide, with thousands of applicants appearing annually. The notification of the RRB ALP 2025 exam was officially released for a total of 9970 posts on April 11, 2025. Candidates were able to apply for the exam from 12th April to 19th May, 2025. As the final deadline date has passed, it will no longer be possible for any more candidates to register for the examination.
However, the board has given a chance to candidates to modify the application form with a charge of Rs 250 from May 22 to 31, 2025. Aspirants who are looking forward to the recruitment are advised to go through the notification to get clearer details regarding the examination. The initial pay scale for an assistant loco pilot in railways is set at Rs 19,900, along with other government allowances and benefits. RRB ALP 2025 Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must meet certain criteria requirements in order to appear for the RRB ALP posts. Below are some of the criteria set by the RRB in terms of education, nationality, and age limit that a candidate must be eligible to appear for the recruitment :
Age Limit : Candidates must be between 18 and 30 years old.
Nationality : Only citizens belonging to India, Nepal, and Bhutan are eligible for the posts.
Educational qualification : He/she should have matriculation/ SSLC and ITI from a recognized board or matriculation/ SSLC plus three years of diploma from a particular field. Apart from these, candidates should also meet the physical and medical requirements to be finally fit for the RRB ALP posts.
RRB ALP 2025 Selection Process And Exam Pattern
There are five phrases that a candidate must go through to qualify for the RRB ALP posts: CBT 1, CBT 2, and CBAT; document verification; and medical test. The first stage, known as CBT 1, is a screening test where candidates will be given a duration of 60 minutes to complete four sections. Candidates who get shortlisted in CBT 1 will be needed to attend CBT 2, which consists of two parts. You will be given a time duration of 90 minutes to complete 100 questions in Part A, while 60 minutes are provided to complete 75 questions in Part B related to relevant trade.
After passing CBT 1 and CBT 2, candidates will then have to go through the Computer-based Aptitude Test (CBAT). This test is conducted to find out the strength of the candidates and analyse his/her decision-making talent and mental abilities. The exam consists of five specific tests, where candidates have to score at least 42 marks in each of those tests to qualify. The five tests are listed below :
i) Memory Test
ii) Following Directions test
iii) Depth Perception Test
iv) Test of power of observation
v) Perceptual speed test
The final list will be decided by providing 70% of the weightage of the marks obtained in Part A of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) II and 30% weightage to the marks from the Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT). Once candidates get qualified and shortlisted in the merit list, he/she will then be called to submit the necessary documents and take part in the medical test to ensure they are fit for the ALP posts.
